VINTAGE FASHION AND SPORT: EXCELLENCE IN THE SERVICE OF PERFORMANCE
The Paris Olympics are fast approaching, and what better opportunity to merge two exciting worlds: fashion and sport? The worlds of fashion and sport have always had a close and fascinating relationship. Many major fashion houses dressed renowned athletes, particularly at the Olympic Games, between the 1950s and 1990s. Today, these sportswear classics are making a comeback.

The Impact of the Olympic Games on Fashion
The Olympic Games are not only a celebration of sport, but also a global showcase for fashion trends and their history through the ages. For the past year, Paris has been perfecting the narrative of a beautiful love affair between clothing and sport. No fewer than three exhibitions have been dedicated to this theme:
- The two parts of "Fashion in Motion" at the Palais Galliera : This chronological exhibition, featuring 200 works, traced the history of fashion from the 18th century to the present day. Evoking the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, "Fashion in Motion" explored the role of clothing in physical and sporting activities, its relationship to the body and movement, and the social consequences of its evolution. It examined the specialization and adaptation of women's clothing in the 19th century and the masculinization of women's garments.
- “ Fashion and Sport, From One Catwalk to Another” at the MAD : With the 2024 Olympic Games just around the corner, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris presented “Fashion and Sport, From One Catwalk to Another” from September 20, 2023, to April 7, 2024. This exhibition explored the links between fashion and sport, from antiquity to the present day. More than 450 pieces, including clothing, accessories, and other works, illustrated the evolution of sportswear and its influence on contemporary fashion. Pioneers like Lanvin and Chanel integrated the world of sportswear into haute couture. Comfort, the common thread, explains the adoption of jogging pants and sneakers in both everyday fashion and haute couture.
The Great Houses and the Olympic Athletes
In 1952, Lanvin dressed the French team for the Helsinki Olympic Games. The designs combined classic style and comfort, allowing athletes to perform while remaining elegant.
In the 1980s, Chanel was commissioned to dress figure skating teams, incorporating haute couture elements into the athletes' costumes. The fashion house successfully combined sophistication and functionality, creating iconic outfits.
Known for its work with Olympic riders, Hermès has dressed many equestrian athletes, bringing unparalleled expertise in leather and textiles, combining durability and timeless style.
These collaborations between fashion houses and athletes have left an indelible mark on the history of fashion and sport, demonstrating that haute couture can perfectly coexist with the demands of top-level sport.
